ROME, Ga. — The Gustavus women's tennis team concluded its fall season at the ITA Cup on Saturday, as the duo of
Allison Szalay and
Molly Austin represented the College in the national tournament. Szalay and Austin reached the ITA Cup with a second place finish at the ITA Midwest Regionals earlier this fall. The two matched up with Oliwia Mikos and Rena Lin of the University of Chicago — seeded third in the tournament after winning the ITA Central Regional Championship — in the first round of doubles play. Mikos and Lin defeated the Gusties 6-3 and 6-0 to move on to the next round.
Due to weather delays, the Gusties had to wait until Saturday for their first consolation draw. Austin and Szalay faced Lindsay Eisenman and Ella Brisset of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, but fell to the duo from California by scores of 6-1 and 6-2. In their second consolation match-up of the day, the Gustavus team defeated Erin McCusker and Sofie Shen of Vassar Collage 7-6 (7-0) and 3-0 (retired).
"We did a little bit of winning and a lot of learning," said Head Coach
Jon Carlson. "It's good to know that we can play at this level, and we certainly saw a lot of high-level competition this week. This experience will definitely help the girls focus on what they need to improve on as they head into the off-season."
