Swim & Dive Defeats Luther to Open Season

SAINT PETER, Minn. — The Gustavus men's and women's swimming & diving teams welcomed Luther to Vic Gustafson Pool Saturday for the 2023-24 season opener, and came away victorious in the dual meet. The Gustie men defeated the Norse 179-58, while the Gustie women won 160-83. 

The Gustie men won 12 of 13 events, including all 11 in the pool. Kieran Ripken led the way, finishing first in the 50 free (21.74), the 100 free (48.36), and was a part of the 200 free relay team that finished first in 1:26.73. Kieran Ripken was joined by his brother Braden Ripken in the 200 free relay. The younger Ripken also contributed to the winning 200 medley with Matt Strom, Brandon Wilcek, and Peyton Richardson (1:36.69). Richardson added wins for the Gusties in the 200 IM (1:59.51) and 100 butterfly (52.29). First-year Ben Kell finished first in the 1000 free (10:40.50) and 500 free (5:05.33). Strom touched the wall first in the 100 backstroke (53.57), while Brandon Wilcek added a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.27). Logan Cyr rounded out the Gustie victories in the pool with a first place finish in the 200 free (1:46.07). On the boards, Andrew Jensen took first in the 3 meter (231.95) and second in the 1 meter (231.55).

The Gustie women won 10 of 13 events. Lucy Peterson won the 50 free in 24.43 and the 100 back in 1:01.70, and was a part of the winning 200 free relay with teammates Olivia Scheeler, Stella Anderson Moye, and Olivia Koeneman, finishing first in 1:40.08. Leah Soukup won the 200 IM in 2:21..07, while Anderson Moye, in her first collegiate meet, took first in the 200 free in 2:00.40. Mariel Castillo touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.52, and Lindsay Sundby placed first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.97. The Gusties also won the 200 medley relay, as the team of Mikayla Witte, Sundby, Castillo, and Koeneman finished in 1:53.99. On the boards, Emmalyn Dickerson won the 1 meter (238.00) and the 3 meter (228.40).

Gustavus hosts UW-Stevens Point and MSU-Mankato next Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
