VIRGINIA, Minn. and GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The No. 38 Gustavus women's tennis team competed as a split squad over the weekend with the top team traveling to Indiana to face nationally ranked opponents and the second team traveling to the Minnesota Iron Range to face Division II competition.
The Gusties' top team defeated DePauw 8-1 and lost to No. 18 WashU 5-4 on Saturday and then lost 6-3 to No. 26 Denison on Sunday. The second team beat UM-Duluth 4-3 on Friday and then lost 4-3 to MSU-Moorhead on Saturday.
"It was a great weekend down in Indiana," Head Coach Jon Carlson said. "We picked up a win which wasn't necessarily expected but we learned a lot playing against top ranked teams. These matches give us a marking point to let us know what we need to work on. I'm very pleased with the overall result. We had a couple chances to win and that got away from us, but all in all, it was a great weekend. You're either winning or you're learning.
"I was also very impressed with the crew that went up to Duluth. They came away with a close win and a close loss against two good Division II teams. Looking forward to getting back to work next week and getting ready for conference matches."
