SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women's tennis team hosted a pair of matches Saturday at the Swanson Tennis Center and came away with split results. The Gusties started the morning with a 5-2 loss to MSU-Mankato and then swept regional opponent Luther 9-0, moving to 6-7 overall. The Mavericks improve to 3-1 and the Norse drop to 11-5.
Playing doubles as one point, the Gusties went down 1-0 after a sweep by the Mavericks, but got a pair of singles victories.
Molly Austin (Fy., Arden Hills) won 7-6, 6-4 at No. 4 and
Renata Hernandez (Sr., Saint James) fought back from a 6-1 first set loss to win the second and third 6-4, 10-8 at the No. 6 spot. MSU claimed the top three singles in straight sets and won at No. 5 in a super breaker.
Against the Norse, the Gusties started the match with convincing wins of 8-2, 8-2, 8-1 in doubles and followed with six straight set victories in singles. The Gusties held the Norse to three or fewer games in every set. Austin and Hernandez finished the day with unblemished singles records.
The Gusties host Northwestern Iowa and Bethany Lutheran on Saturday.
