ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Gustavus men's soccer continued its undefeated season Saturday with a closely-contested 1-0 win at Bethel. The No. 5-ranked Gusties improve to 13-0-3 overall and 7-0-2 in the MIAC, while securing a first-round bye in the MIAC playoffs as one of the top two teams.
The first half went scoreless with the Royals out-shooting the Gusties 7-4 overall and 3-1 on goal, but
Egan Bedwell made all three saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Gustavus had a few scoring opportunities in the second half and the pressure finally pushed through in the 76th minute.
Diego Paulin sent a cross from the right side directly in front of goal to
Joe Flory, who's shot was blocked by the keeper. Flory gathered the rebound, played it back to
Rivaldo Pena on the left side who found an opening at the top of the net for his second goal of the season. The goal proved to be the game-winner as the Gusties held the Royals scoreless, securing the 10th shutout of the season.
The Gusties out-shot the Royals 13-11 overall and 7-5 on goal with Bedwell making all five saves.
Gustavus wraps up the regular season next Saturday at St. Scholastica with the MIAC regular season championship on the line.
