WINONA, Minn. — The Gustavus women's tennis team took to Winona to face Saint Mary's in their MIAC opener, and walked away with an impressive 9-0 win. The Gusties jumped out to a 3-0 lead after dominating doubles play, and sealed their first victory of the season with six wins at singles.
Allison Szalay and
Molly Austin opened doubles play with a clean 8-0 win in the No. 1 spot for the Gusties.
Kaya De Bruijn and
Bethany Smith followed with an 8-1 win, and
Pavla Yakimova and
Brooke Haddorff closed out the doubles competition with an 8-2 victory in the No. 3 slot.
In the singles, De Bruijn dominated at No. 4, winning in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0, to claim another victory for the Gusties.
Ella De Young picked up the first MIAC singles win of her career in the No. 5 singles, winning 7-6 in set one and 6-0 in set two.
Pavla Yakimova added a 6-3, 6-2 win, while MIAC Athlete of the Week
Alli Laux posted a pair of 6-1 wins to take the No. 3 singles matchup.
Molly Austin also bested the Cardinals' No. 2 player 6-1, 6-0 to extend the Gustie advantage. Szalay closed things out at No. 1 singles, coming from behind to win against SMU's Natalie Peterson, 2-6, 6-1, 12-10.
The Gusties, now 1-1 on the season, have next weekend off before hosting Sioux Falls on March 2.
