Women's Tennis Back on Track, Defeats No. 32 Hope 5-4

MADISON, Wis. — After four tough matches in Virginia last week, the Gustavus women's tennis team got back on track Friday morning, defeating regional opponent and nationally-ranked Hope 5-4 on day one of the Midwest Invite. The Gusties won four of their five points in the singles to defeat the No. 32 Flying Dutch.

Hope took a 2-1 lead after the doubles, winning 8-3 at No. 1 over Molly Austin and Allison Szalay and 8-7 over Alli Laux and Brooke Haddorff. The team of Kaya De Bruijn and Bethany Smith picked up the first win of the day for the Gusties, winning 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.

Gustavus dominated singles play, dropping only No. 1 and No. 2 singles to the Flying Dutch. Austin, De Bruijn, Ella De Young, and Haddorff won in singles No. 3 through No. 6, respectively, claiming all four victories in two sets.

The Gusties have a tall order ahead of them in round two of the Invite, facing No. 7 Wash U Saturday at 8 a.m.
