SAINT PETER, Minn. – No. 24 women's tennis dropped its spring home opener to DII MSU-Mankato 4-3 on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Swanson Tennis Center.
MSU (1-0 overall) claimed the doubles point, winning over
Karina Elvestrom (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) and
Kaya De Bruijn (Jr., Maasland, Netherlands) 6-4 and
Molly Austin (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn.) and
Allison Szalay (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa) 6-1 at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively.
Brooke Haddorff (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) and
Pavla Yakimova (Jr., Glasgow, Scotland) claimed the only win in the doubles, a 6-0 decision at No. 3.
In singles play, Elvestrom,
Noor Omar (Fy., Fridley, Minn.), and Yakimova claimed the three singles victories for the Gusties, led by Elvestorm in the one spot with a 7-6, 6-3 win. Omar was victorious at No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-4 decision to remain undefeated in dual play so far, while Yakimova won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
The Gusties (1-3 overall) make the long trip up north tomorrow afternoon to face Concordia (0-5, 0-3 MIAC) at 1 p.m. to open their MIAC schedule, followed by a 5:30 p.m. match against MSU-Moorhead (3-0 overall).
