Women's Soccer Draws Even With St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. - Traveling up the North Shore on Tuesday, the Gustavus women's soccer team tied St. Scholastica, 1-1. Tessa Zachmann led the team with four shots on goal and scored one goal for the Gusties while goalkeeper Katelyn Olson made 10 saves in net.

In the first 15 minutes of the game, Gustavus garnered three shots on goal, all coming from different players. First-year Brayleigh Sumner (Grafton, Wis.) had the first just 2:15 into the contest, junior Tessa Zachmann (Blaine, Minn.) just four minutes later, and junior Lauren Coy (Mahtomedi, Minn.) just five minutes after that one. Another flurry of offensive pressure for the Gusties came between 24:31 and 28:53 when the visitors took four shots, two of which forced saves. Overall, Gustavus took 10 shots and had seven on goal, all of which were saved, and had five corner kicks, but could not find a goal.

Zachmann picked up her third goal of the season to put the Gusties on the board in the 60th minute. She picked off a pass from a Saint and took the ball herself and chipped the goalkeeper, finding the right side netting to even the score. Zachmann and Coy both had shots on goal after the goal to try and take the lead, but neither did find the back of the net, ending in a 1-1 tie.

Zachmann's four shots on goal is a season high for an individual and the team had a season-high 10 corner kicks. Senior Taylor Finney (Byron, Minn.), sophomore Sophia Post (Mankato, Minn.), junior Kate Hamski (Blaine, Minn.), sophomore Elly Soli (Ham Lake, Minn.), and sophomore Katie Thomas (Mounds View, Minn.) all played 90 minutes.

The Gustavus women's soccer team hosts Hamline at 1 p.m. on Saturday to continue MIAC play.
