CHICAGO, Ill. - After a first half lead over the No. 20 ranked UChicago Maroons, the home team scored three themselves to top the Gusties, 3-1.
Gustavus (0-1-1, 0-0-0 MIAC) found a goal in the first half from senior
Darren Chukel (Hudson, Wis.), but three goals in the second half from the No. 20 ranked Maroons (2-1-0, 0-0-0 UAA) extinguished any hopes of a ranked upset on the road.Â
Both teams had four shots on goal in the first half, but the rate at which the teams operated is what differed. All four shots from Gustavus were shots on goal, whereas the University of Chicago had four shots on goal and an additional four off target. In the 31st minute, the Gusties earned a corner kick, which set up the one and only goal for the visitors. Junior
Easton Hoch (Victoria, Minn.) took the corner, finding Chukel who placed the ball in the lower right corner of the goal.Â
After two shots from the Gusties in the first 15 minutes of the second half, the Maroons flipped the script of the match on its head. In the 62nd minute, the Maroons scored their first to equalize and just five minutes later a penalty kick goal gave the University of Chicago the lead. 10 minutes later, the Maroons scored again, giving themselves a two-goal lead. Gustavus had three shots in the last 10 minutes of the game, but could not find two goals.Â
Gustavus men's soccer will return to action on Wednesday, traveling up to Superior, Wisconsin for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against UW-Superior.Â
