The men’s cross country team finished the 2022 season with a seventh place finish of 11 at the MIAC Championship. In the NCAA Regionals, the Gusties placed 19th of 28. Jake Wielgos and Logan McCullough led the way in the conference meet, finishing 32nd and 33rd, while Tucker Wallin was the highest finisher for the Gusties at the NCAA North Regional Meet, crossing the line in 26:11.4 for 69th. The team finished the season with a 3.509 GPA, earning the USTFCCCA Academic Team Award. Jack Marble, Henry Hinchcliffe, and Tyler Smith were all named CSC (previously CoSIDA) Academic All-District.

2021 | Statistics
The 2021 men's cross country team put together an impressive season after the COVID-19 hiatus, finishing fourth of 11 at the MIAC Championships and 8th of 29 at the NCAA Regional Meet. Under the leadership of Head Coach Brenden Huber, three Gusties finished with All-Region honors, as Andrew Stumbo, Henry Hinchcliffe, and Garet Grant finished in the top-35. Stumbo and Grant were also named All-Conference, while HInchcliffe and Casey Olson were All-MIAC Honorable Mention. The Gusties once again sent Stumbo to the NCAA Division III Championships. Stumbo finished 109th with a personal best 24:55.5, the third-fastest 8k time in program history. Henry Hinchcliffe, Bryce Knutson, and Stumbo all received USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.

Coach Scott Jerome’s squad turned in a solid season even though the team was plagued by injuries. The Gusties finished eighth at the MIAC Championships which is the program’s best finish since 1999. Freshman Alex Zuppan, who placed 27th was the team’s top finisher. The squad completed its season with a 16th place finish out of 22 teams at the NCAA Central Region meet. Junior captain Brent Magnusson, who placed 77th, was the team’s top finisher. The future looks bright for the squad as 16 of the 18 runners return including all of its top seven runners.

First-year Head Coach Scott Jerome directed the team to a ninth place finish at the MIAC Championships and a 19th place finish at the NCAA Central Region meet. Senior Mike Henderson was the team’s top finisher at the MIAC meet as he placed 41st. Freshman Gerald Ryan was the team’s top finisher at the Region meet as he placed 90th.

The men’s cross country team wrapped up its second season under the direction of Coach Vihstadt with an eighth place finish (out of 11) at the MIAC Championship, and a 12th place finish (out of 25) at the NCAA Central Region meet. Senior Steffan Freeman led the Gustie contingent with a 12th place finish (earning all-conference honors) at the MIAC Championships, a 12th place finish at the NCAA Central Region meet (earning all-region honors) and a 83rd place finish at the NCAA Championships. Freeman, who placed 54th at the NCAA Championships last year, is only the fourth Gustavus runner to compete in the NCAA Championships in two consecutive seasons.

The Gusties started the regular season with strong performances at the UW-River Falls Invitational (third out of 10) and the St. John’s Invitational (fifth out of eight) and ended it with a solid sixth place finish (out of 15) at the UW-La Crosse Invitational. The championship season began with a disappointing eighth place finish (out of 11) at the conference meet. The next week, however, the team responded with its finest performance of the season as all seven runners recorded their season best times resulting in a ninth place finish (out of 22) at the NCAA Central Region meet. Junior Steffan Freeman spearheaded the team’s late season surge as he earned all-conference honors with an 11th place finish at the MIAC Championships, and all-region honors with an 11th place finish at the region meet. Freeman completed his outstanding season with a 54th place finish at the NCAA Championships.

Eighth Place Finish At Region Meet Highlights Men’s Cross Country Season - Senior Sedge Freeman recorded one of the best performances of his collegiate career at the NCAA Central Region meet as he finished eighth out of 165 runners and helped the Gusties to a strong eighth place finish out of 24 teams. As a result of his eighth place individual finish, Freeman qualified for the NCAA Championships where he placed 77th out of 183 competitors. The Gusties regular season was highlighted by a first place team finish in the gray race at the UW-La Crosse Invitational. At the conference championships, Coach June Kloubec’s squad finished sixth out of 11 teams. Top finishers included Sedge Freeman in 19th place and Stephon Freeman in 27th place.
