Head Coach Tyler Oliver is in his second year leading the Gustavus men’s soccer program entering the 2026-27 academic year after accepting the job on January 29th, 2025. Oliver, who spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Gustavus, is the 10th head coach in the 58-year history of the program.
In Oliver’s first season, the Gusties maintained a 14-6-1 record and advanced to the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships, maintaining a tradition of excellence within the men’s soccer program. The team was one of the best teams in the country at home, going 7-1-1 and was ranked as high as #13 in the country throughout the season.
The program boasted the MIAC Rookie of the Year in Kieran Mahan which was the third consecutive season that Oliver had accomplished that feat in addition to five more student-athletes who earned an award from the MIAC. Joe Flory, Kieran Mahan, and Spencer Skjeldestad all continued to earn honors by being named United Soccer Coaches All-Region members. In the classroom, nine Gusties were named MIAC Academic All-Conference, six Gusties earned CSC Academic All-District awards, and Flory advanced to the national ballot, where he was named a CSC Academic All-American.
Oliver most recently spent the past two seasons as the head coach at Hamline University, where he set the program record for wins in a season (14) in 2024. While at Hamline, Oliver recruited and coached the 2023 and 2024 MIAC Rookies of the Year, and coached three MIAC All-Conference selections in 2024 - marking the most in one season in program history.
Prior to Hamline, Oliver spent the 2019-22 seasons on staff at Gustavus - the first two years as an assistant and the second two seasons as the associate head coach. While on the Gustie touchline, Oliver was a part of two MIAC regular season championships, one MIAC playoff title, and two NCAA tournament appearances, highlighted by a national quarterfinal finish in 2022. Oliver and the rest of the coaches were named 2022 North Region Staff of the Year by United Soccer Coaches. During his four years with Gustavus, Oliver coached 11 All-Conference players, nine All-Region selections, and five All-Americans.
Oliver, who started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Elmhurst College in 2018, is also a coach with the St. Croix Soccer Club where he has led two separate teams to Minnesota Club State Championships and Finals at U18/U19. Oliver's collegiate background as a player started at Eastern Illinois University and then finished at the University of St. Thomas, where he was a part of two MIAC regular season championships, two MIAC playoff titles, back-to-back NCAA Elite Eight appearances, and one Final Four appearance. Oliver, an Oakdale, Minn. native, earned his bachelor's degree from St. Thomas in 2018 and is currently pursuing a master's degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University, St. Paul.
