Gary Holmseth is entering his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Gustavus men's basketball team.
Holmseth, one of the most highly regarded high school coaches in southern Minnesota, joined the coaching staff under Mark Hanson for the 2021-22 season.
Last year, the Gustie men's basketball team had an historical season, winning the 2024 MIAC Playoff Championship after an epic postseason run. The playoff title was the first for the Gusties since 2005. The Gusties fell to Loras in the first round of the national tournament, finishing the season 18-11 overall and 14-6 in the MIAC, the best record in a dozen years.
Prior to coming to Gustavus, Holmseth served as the head seventh grade boy's basketball coach for Blue Earth Area. Holmseth spent 23 years at Blue Earth Area as the head boy's basketball coach from 1989 to 2012.
Holmseth's Blue Earth Area teams won 360 games while he was a head coach, earning him a spot in the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2014. During his 23 years as head coach, he was the winningest coach in the South Central Conference and his teams won several conference championships. His teams won six sub-section titles and he was named Section Coach of the Year five times.
Holmseth has served in leadership roles promoting Minnesota high school basketball by serving as President of the MBCA in 2003, and section representative on the executive board for several years. In addition to basketball, he has coached football, golf, and track and field.
Holmseth graduated with his bachelor's degree from MSU-Mankato and received his master's from Southwest Minnesota State.
