Meuwissen’s Early Goal Allows Women’s Hockey To Slip Past Saint Mary’s 1-0

The Gustavus women's hockey team got an early goal from Tam Meuwissen and held on for a 1-0 non-conference win over Saint Mary's at Don Robert's Ice Rink in St. Peter on Saturday afternoon.  Danielle Justice and Emily Klatt combined to post the shutout in goal for Gustavus. The Gusties , which extended its current win streak to four games, improves to 6-3-2 overall.

At 5:01 of the first period, Gustavus forward Tam Meuwissen took a pass from Allie Schwab right in front of Cardinal goaltender Kaye Collier and slipped the puck past Collier into the lower left hand corner of the net for what would turn out to be the only goal of the game.

Gustavus out-shot Saint Mary's 39-17 in the contest, but Cardinal goaltender Collier came up with several outstanding saves to keep Saint Mary's within striking distance of the Gusties.  Gustavus held an 8-6 shot advantage in the first period, a 13-6 advantage in second period, and an 18-5 advantage in the third period.

There were nine penalties called in the game and neither team was able to score on the power play. Gustavus was 0-for-5 with the player advantage and the Cardinals were 0-for-4.

Gustavus played two goaltenders in the game as Danielle Justice played the first 30 minutes and Emily Klatt played the second 30 minutes.  Justice registered 11 saves, while Klatt recorded six saves.  Kaye Collier turned away 38 shots for Saint Mary's.

The Gusties will return to MIAC play next weekend with a series against St. Benedict.  Gustavus will travel to St. Cloud on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and then return to St. Peter for the finale on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
