Cartony’s Third Period Goal Pushes Women’s Hockey Past Hamline 2-1

Gustavus first year forward Amanda Cartony broke a 1-1 tie with a goal at the 6:01 mark of the third period allowing the women's hockey team to slip past Hamline 2-1 in St. Paul on Saturday evening.  It was Cartony's second goal of the weekend and allowed the Gusties to sweep the weekend series with the Pipers and maintain their position atop the MIAC standings with a league mark of 10-2-2.

Gustavus jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kayla Ingbretson at the 14:58 mark of the first period.  Lisa Tuuri was credited with the assist on the goal.  The Gusties out-shot the Pipers 10-4 in the first 20 minutes of play.

Hamline bounced back to tie the score at 1-1 when Colleen Brigl scored at the 14:22 mark of the second period.  Gustavus held a 24-3 advantage in shots in the period and had four power play opportunities but could not get the puck past Piper goaltender Nicole Jones.

The Gusties would continue to put pressure on Hamline in the third period until Cartony managed to get the puck past Jones for what turned out to be the game-winner at the 6:01 mark.  Lindsey Hjelm was credited with the assist.

Danielle Justice was the winning goaltender for Gustavus.  She registered seven saves in the contest.  Nicole Jones compiled 56 saves for Hamline in a losing effort.

Gustavus will take on Saint Mary's in a key MIAC series next weekend.  The two teams will play in St. Peter on Friday night at 7:00 pm and then travel to Winona on Saturday for a 2:00 pm contest.
