MOORHEAD, Minn. — Raphael Cattelin and
Jared Hecht helped the Gustavus men's soccer team turn up the offensive heat against Concordia, erupting for six goals, and five between the two seniors, in a 6-0 shutout of the Cobbers. The Gusties improve to 5-3-4 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play.
Cattelin wasted no time getting the Gusties on the board, taking a feed from
Nick Katzman and
Otis Anderson to net the game's opening goal just 1:22 into play.
Alex Krumenauer picked up the second tally 18 minutes later, and the Gusties never looked back.
Jared Hecht scored his third goal of the season and first of the afternoon 10 minutes later, taking a feed from
Owen Johnson to make the score 3-0 at the half.
Cattelin's second of the day came 11 minutes into the second half, once again getting a feed from Anderson for the 4-0 lead. Four minutes later, and fresh off a substitution, Hecht put up his second, an unassisted tally at minute 70 of the game. Cattelin put the finishing touches on the game, sealing the score at 6-0 with his second career hat trick.
"Honestly, this has been building for a while," said Head Coach
Tudor Flintham. "We have been playing well and have felt that we've deserved much better results, we just haven't been able to scores goals consistently or recreate quality looks. But the guys heard the challenge and decided to simplify our game. There's a choice to be an artist or a soldier, and a team needs more soldiers than artists. It took us being a family today. We reflected on what it was that the team needed, and, the truth is, it needed us to all give up a little bit of ourselves. There wasn't really a magic answer or a tactical masterclass, we just decided to focus on being a family and working for each other. The goals came because we ran for each other, covered each other, gave more information off the ball, and stayed on script. I don't think a single guy took a play off or let the tension in the game rest. And that's what it takes — togetherness, family, and a ruthlessness to never let off."
Wesley Sanders made one save in goal to post the clean sheet. Cattelin finished with seven points on three goals and an assist, totaling a team- and game-leading four shots on goal. Hecht wasn't far behind, adding five points of his own with a pair of goals and an assist, while
Otis Anderson chipped in a trio of helpers for three points on day.
Jack Isroff added an assist on Cattelin's final goal for his first collegiate point.
The Gusties are back for a quick turnaround, heading to Decorah, Iowa on Monday to face Luther.
