NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Both the Gustavus men's and women's cross country teams placed sixth at the MIAC Championships on Saturday.
Nick Brauer highlighted the day with an All-Conference honorable mention finish, taking 18th in 25:41.4.
"He had set out a lofty goal at the beginning of the year that he wanted to be on the podium today and we had some conversations that might not be a simple task but he worked so hard and is constantly willing to learn," Head Coach
Brenden Huber said. "Today was a culmination of him putting a lot of things together and finishing the job. It really set the tone for the whole team."
Logan McCullough was next for the Gustie men, taking 37th in 26:21.5.
Jake Wielgos finished 54th in 27:02.3,
Carson Roehl took 56th in 27:04.9, and
Will Janzen placed 60th in 27:14.7.
"Logan was right there with Nick for most of the race," Huber said. "Our wave of guys was moving the whole time and this is by far the best our guys have competed this year. It was an awesome day on the guys side."
Molly Liston led the Gustie women with a 29th place finish in 23:32.3.
Sydney Hagen was close behind in 31st at 23:34.3 and
Kailyn Walukas took 37th in 23:51.7.
Laura Sunnarborg and
Mackenzie Murphy rounded out the scoring in 64th and 65th place, respectively, clocking in at 24:45.5 and 24:47.8.
"We had a lot of good things happen today with a lot of PRs up and down for the women," Huber said. "We're a very young team and some other conference coaches complimented them and acknowledged that we're on the doorstep. There's still more in the tank and I think we could see some good stuff at regions yet. These girls are still figuring out what the 6k is all about and what it takes at this level. Overall pleased with how the ladies did today. We're climbing at the right time and happy with how hard they competed."
Gustavus competes at the Saint John's Fall Finale next Friday before NCAA regions on Nov. 11.
