OSHKOSH, Wis. - Gustavus volleyball was slow out of the gate in Friday's NCAA second round matchup against host UW-Oshkosh and never recovered in a straight set loss. The 18th-ranked Gusties finish the season 26-7 overall, while the third-ranked Titans move on to the regional championship at 36-1.
The Titans came out firing on all cylinders to open the first set with an 11-1 lead while the Gusties had to burn both of their timeouts. Three Titan errors and a
Marlee Turn kill made the score 14-7, but that was the closest the Gusties got in a decisive 25-10 loss.
The Gusties found their footing in the second set as three kills from Turn gave them a 3-1 lead. The lead switched hands five times and neither team held more than a two-point advantage for the duration of the set. Tied 23-23, the Titans were able to connect on a pair of kills from Riley Kindt for a 25-23 win.
Gustavus again played the host team tight early in the third set, holding leads of 7-5 and 10-8, but the Titans responded with seven consecutive points, highlighted by three straight services aces that hit the top of the net and dropped down for uncontested receives. With all the momentum, Oshkosh finished the match with nine unanswered points for a 25-13 win.
Playing in her final career game, Turn led the offense with seven kills. She also had six digs and a block.
Kasie Tweet had 18 assists and
Maren Sundberg led the back line with 22 digs. At the conclusion of the regional championship, Sundberg was named to the All-Tournament Team.
