SAINT PETER, Minn. — The Gustavus men's soccer team opened the 2023 season with a victory at home, defeating Knox College 1-0 for the first win of the year. First-year
Simon Woods certainly made an impression in his first collegiate start and game, scoring the eventual game-winner 6:55 into play.
Woods took a long feed from
Otis Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and
Nick Katzman (Minneapolis, Minn.) down the middle of the field, beating Knox keeper Lantzendorffer in front of the box. The Gusties continued to dominate on both sides of the field, combining for 10 shots on goal to the Prairie Fire's one.
Woods and Anderson each led the way with two shots on goal, with
Sam Just (Lakeville, Minn.),
Rivaldo Pena (Rochester, Minn.),
Owen Johnson (Apple Valley, Minn.),
Ethan Glissendorf (Sioux Falls, S.D.),
Alex Krumenauer (Otsego, Minn.), and
Joe Flory combined for the other six.
Wesley Sanders (Urbandale, Iowa) made one save on the only shot he faced in the first half.
The Gusties, now 1-0, face the defending national champions UChicago on Sunday.
