No. 18 Volleyball Wins Two at Augsburg Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - No. 18 Gustavus volleyball won its first two matches at the Augsburg Invitational on Friday afternoon, improving to 5-1 overall. 

Gustavus 3, UW-La Crosse 2

The Gusties handed UW-La Crosse its first loss of the season (4-1) after claiming the fifth set 15-10. Marlee Turn (Kennedy, Minn.) proved why she is one of the top attackers in Division III by landing five of her 15 total kills in the final frame, highlighted by three straight kills to go up 13-8 and force an Eagle timeout. 

Gustavus was in the driver's seat early in the match after a decisive 25-7 first set victory. The Gusties won the second stanza in a more competitive nature 25-22 before La Crosse responded by claiming the third (25-23) and fourth (25-17). 

The Gusties outhit the Eagles .128-.080 with Turn pacing the offense at 15 kills while also adding 15 digs. Madi Kes (Jordan, Minn.) added 11 kills and Lauren Klaith (Rockford, Minn.) had 10. Kasie Tweet (Adrian, Minn.) distributed 41 assists to go along with a season-high 20 digs. 

Gustavus 3, Wartburg 1

Gustavus rolled its momentum into the second match of the afternoon, claiming the first two sets 25-14, 25-17 before Wartburg answered with a 25-21 third set win. The Gusties bounced right back with another convincing 25-14 win in the fourth to close out the match. 

The Gusties limited the Knights to -.036 hitting and had twice as many blocks (12-6). Kes and Turn each provided nine kills to lead the offense while Tweet had 28 assists. Tweet and Maren Sundberg (Eagan, Minn.) led the back line with 14 digs apiece. 

The Gusties continue play at the Augsburg Invite Saturday against UW-Eau Claire and Edgewood.
