DULUTH, Minn. — The Gustavus men's basketball team completed the series sweep over St. Scholastica, winning 76-68 on the road over the Saints. The Gusties opened the scoring early and never looked back, keeping St. Scholastica at bay and maintaining the lead for the whole game. The win gives the Gusties their tenth of the season, moving to 10-8 overall and 9-4 in the MIAC.
Brady Kienitz scored the game's first basket on the first possession, taking a pass from
Wyatt Olson for one from downtown to put the Gusties on the board. From there, the Gusties steadily built out their lead, going on a seven point scoring run to separate themselves from the Saints early in the first half. Gustavus made six from long range in the first frame to head into the locker room with a 34-27 lead.
Despite a comeback effort from St. Scholastica early in the second, 11 points from
Evan Wieker gave the Gusties the edge and a double-digit lead to pull away from the Saints. The team shot 50 percent from the field compared to the Saints' 43.3 percent, forcing five turnovers and disrupting the Scholastica 3-point shooters, who missed three of their last four attempts in the game.
The Gusties shot 27-for-58 from the field (46.6 percent) and made 13 3-pointers on 26 attempts, a season-high for the team.
Evan Wieker led the offense with 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting, including a mark of 5-for-6 from 3-point range.
Spencer Swanson posted another double-double, getting 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Adam Biewen and
Wyatt Olson rounded out the double-digit scoring, with Biewen putting up 12 points and Olson 11.
The Gusties head back on the road Saturday, traveling to Arden Hills to face Bethel at 3 p.m.
