SAINT PETER, Minn. - No. 7/8 Gustavus women's basketball remained undefeated in conference play Saturday with a decisive 82-68 win over Bethel at Gus Young Court. The Gusties improve to 11-1 overall and 7-0 in the MIAC, while the Royals drop to 6-7 overall and 4-4 in the league.
Gustavus got out to a fast start, scoring the game's first eight points before the Royals ended their scoring drought nearly five minutes into the first quarter. A couple free throws by
Ella Peters gave the Gusties their largest lead of the quarter at 17-7 and ended the frame with a 22-15 advantage.
The Gusties started the second quarter on an 18-6 run, sparked by the offensive play by
Syd Hauger and
Emma Kniefel, and led 44-28 at the break.
A three-pointer by
Emy Wolkow with 1:42 left in the third gave the Gusties their largest lead of the game at 62-38 and the home squad cruised to victory from there.
Gustavus shot 51.9 percent from the floor and made 9-of-16 three-pointers. Kniefel led the team with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting and added four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block. Hauger was next with 16 points.
Rachel Kawiecki led the team down on the blocks, hauling in a game-high nine rebounds while dishing out a career-high eight assists.
The Gusties travel to Saint Mary's Wednesday night for their next MIAC matchup.
