SAINT PAUL, Minn. - After trading touchdowns early in the first quarter, Gustavus scored 29 unanswered points en route to a 36-7 victory at Macalester on Saturday afternoon. Playing at the No. 1 receiver spot in place of an injured
Jake Breitbach,
Caden Kleinschmidt had a career day for the Gusties, hauling in seven catches for 228 yards and three touchdowns. His total receiving yards are the fourth most in a single game in program history, tying Rich Ryan's 228 yards against Washington University in 1976.Â
After Macalester missed a 38-yard field goal attempt on its opening drive of the game, the Gusties drove the field in four plays, resulting in a 49-yard touchdown pass from
Jacob Ginskey to Kleinschmidt for the early 7-0 lead. The Scots responded on the ensuing possession, going 74 yards in 11 plays, capped by a seven-yard rushing touchdown. Both teams punted on their next drives, but the Gusties ended the first quarter with a 41-yard touchdown connection from Ginskey to Kleinschmidt.Â
Both the Gusties and Scots had trouble moving the ball early in the second quarter with five possessions without a score until Ginskey connected with Kleinschmidt for their third touchdown of the game, this time for 76 yards. The Gustie defense got an interception from
Carson DeKam on the next play from scrimmage, but ended up turning the ball over on downs.
Bode Hogan made a tackle for no gain on a fourth-and-two attempt, giving the ball back to the offense. The Gusties responded with a six-play, 50-yard drive, ending on a 10-yard touchdown run by
River Wood.Â
DeKam made another interception on the next Scot drive with just 20 seconds remaining in the half. The Gusties were able to get the ball into Scot territory and ended the half with a 45-yard field goal by
Jack Sieben for a 30-7 lead at the break.Â
The third quarter went scoreless and the last touchdown of the game was scored early in the fourth.
William Hawkins intercepted a pass at the Gustie 31-yard line, went the width of the field and pitched a lateral to
Eric Lyons Jr. at the Gustie 47-yard line, who took it in for the touchdown return.Â
Gustavus out-gained Macalester 387-249 in total yards. Ginskey completed 11-of-26 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns. Wood led the rushing attack with 21 carries for 104 yards and a score. As they have all season long,
Jack Klug and DeKam led the defensive efforts with nine tackles each. Klug added 2.5 tackles for loss while DeKam had two interceptions.Â
The Gusties (4-2, 3-1 MIAC) now prepare for a road test at No. 3 Saint John's (6-0, 4-0 MIAC) next Saturday.Â
