SAINT PETER, Minn. - Gustavus men's soccer is moving on to the second round of the NCAA Championships following a 2-1 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday. Gustavus is now 16-1-3 overall, while the Raiders end the season 12-4-6.
The Gusties opened the scoring in the 27th minute on a corner kick.
Owen Johnson sent the corner in, which was flicked on by
Joe Flory to the back post where
Jared Hecht was waiting. Hecht tallied his sixth goal of the season and in the process, ran into the post and broke it at the base, causing a delay to bring in a replacement goal. The score remained 1-0 Gusties at the half with the home team out-shooting the Raiders 8-6.
MSOE tied the game in the 61st minute but it took the Gusties only four minutes to respond.
Carlos Robles sent in a free kick, which was headed over to
Simon Woods, who then found
Joe Flory direct in front of the net who put home his team-leading 12th goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winner.
The Raiders put pressure on the Gusties throughout the second half, out-shooting the hosts 8-1, but the score remained 2-1 for a final. MSOE out-shot the Gusties 14-9 overall and 6-4 on goal as
Egan Bedwell made five saves.
Gustavus now faces UW-Platteville, who advanced on penalty kicks against North Central, at 1 p.m. Sunday with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line.
