SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men's swimming & diving team collected a 187.5-125.5 victory over UW-Stevens Point in the team's home opener Saturday at Vic Gustafson Pool. Winning 11 of 17 events, the Gusties improve to 3-0 in dual meets this season.
The Gusties got off to a strong start on Saturday, opening the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The team of
Ben Kell (So., Minneapolis, Minn.),
Peyton Richardson (5th, Crystal Lake, Ill.),
Nyden Hill (Sr., Conway, Ark.), and
Braden Ripken (So., Blaine, Minn.) touched the wall 1:37.56 for the team's first win of the day. Kell, Richardson, and Hill all added additional individual victories, led by Richardson with a trio of wins.
The MIAC Men's Swimmer of the Week took first in the 200 butterfly (1:59.26), 100 butterfly (51.61), and the 200 IM (1:59.76). Meanwhile, Hill dominated the breaststroke, winning the 100 in 1:01.71 and the 200 in 2:16.10.
Kell added a victory in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 2:02.71, while
Aiden Shermak (So., Bloomington, Minn.) finished first in the 100 free in 49.28. For the second consecutive weekend,
Logan Cyr (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) totaled a trio of individual victories as well, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:48.87, the 500 freestyle in 4:57.55, and the 400 IM in 4:22.89.
In addition to the 11 victories, the Gusties also took second in eight events. The 400 freestyle relay of Cyr, Shermak,
Brendan Collins (So., Maple Grove, Minn.), and Ripken finished in 3:14.37.
Teddy Solensky (So., Jamestown, N.D.) finished second in the 1000 free (10:44.47), while Ripken picked up two second-place finishes in the 50 free (22.05) and the 200 breaststroke (2:17.83).
Kell took second in the 100 backstroke in 56.32, while Shermak finished behind Richardson in the 100 butterfly in 55.88.
Jack Reilly (Fy., Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished second in the 200 backstroke, while
Jacob Robischon (Fy., Sauk Centre, Minn.) rounded out the second place finishes in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.75.
On the boards,
Trevor Johnson (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) took third in both the 1- and 3-meter with a score of 152.90 and 153.30, respectively.
The Gusties are back at home next Saturday, hosting St. Olaf at Vic Gustafson Pool for an 11 a.m. dual meet.
