Men's Soccer Lands Four on United Soccer Coaches All-Region Team

SAINT PETER, Minn. - United Soccer Coaches announced its Division III Men's Soccer All-Region teams Tuesday and four Gustavus student-athletes received recognition. Jared Hecht and Owen Johnson were named First Team All-Region IX, Spencer Skjeldestad was named Second Team, and Joe Flory earned Third Team honors. 

The 2024 MIAC Defensive Player of the Year, Hecht led a defensive unit that posted 11 shutouts, which was tied for eighth most in Division III this season. Hecht and the Gusties led the MIAC with a team 0.76 goals against average. Hecht was instrumental in the Gusties holding opponents to three or fewer shots on goal in 11 games this season, including two games with zero shots on goal, and four more with just one. The Apple Valley native also played center forward and tallied 15 points on six goals and three assists.

Johnson captures his third consecutive All-Region honor, becoming the sixth player in program history to become a three-time recipient. This season, Johnson led the team with 10 assists, along with four goals for 18 points, which ranked second on the team. Earlier this season, Johnson set the program record for career assists and with his final assist in the first round of the NCAA tournament this season, Johnson tied the MIAC record with 47 career assists. Johnson also led the team with 59 shots and 24 shots on goal. 

Playing on the back line, Skjeldestad earns his first All-Region selection. Along with Hecht, Skjeldestad has helped the Gusties post 11 shutouts with a 0.76 goals against average. Playing in 19 games this season, Skjeldestad also posted one goal – a game-winner – and one assist for three points.
 
The leading striker for the Gusties, Flory garners his first All-Region accolade after leading the team with 27 points on 12 goals and three assists. In 20 games this season, Flory had four game-winning goals and boasted a .460 shots on goal percentage.

Gustavus finished the season 16-2-3 overall and went 8-0-2 in the MIAC to captaure the MIAC regular season championship. The Gusties fell in the second round of the NCAA tournament to UW-Platteville.
