SAINT PETER, Minn. — The Gustavus women's tennis team opened the spring season against MSU-Mankato Saturday afternoon, and fell to the Mavericks by a score of 3-6.Â
The Gusties shined in the doubles competition, winning two of three matchups.
Allison Szalay and
Molly Austin, who competed nationally at the ITA Cup in the fall, won in the No. 1 spot with an 8-6 score to lead things off for the Gusties.
Kaya De Bruijn and
Bethany Smith added another win, 8-7, in the second doubles slot.
Pavla Yakimova and
Brooke Haddorff gave a hard-fought battle to the Mavericks but ultimately fell at No. 3 by a score of 8-7.Â
In the singles competition,
Alli Laux walked away with the only Gustie win. Laux came from behind to win at No. 3 singles, 4-6, 7-6, 10-6. Moly Austin toook MSU's Freia Lawrence to three sets in the No. 2 singles, but fell 5-7, 6-4, 3-10.Â
The Gusties open MIAC play next Saturday, making the trip to Winona to face Saint Mary's at 4:30 p.m.
