FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Gustavus women's tennis team dropped its second match of the trip, this time to No. 19 Case Western, 9-0. The Gusties drop to 7-4 overall while the Spartans improve to 9-3 on the season.
Case Western opened up with dominant play in the doubles competition, as the nationally-ranked duo of Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey dealt
Allison Szalay and
Molly Austin an 8-0 defeat at No. 1 doubles.
Kaya De Bruijn and
Bethany Smith fell 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, while
Alli Laux and
Pavla Yakimova put up the best fight at No. 3, falling 8-5 to the Spartans.
Case won all but one singles matches in two sets – the lone exception being Laux, who played a marathon at No. 3 singles. Laux came back from a 6-4 deficit in the first set to win the second 7-5, before falling in the tiebreaker, 10-8.
"We did a lot of learning today and yesterday," said Head Coach
Jon Carlson. "We definitely improved in some areas today, but both Case Western and Southwestern are very good teams. I think these two matches will help us be a better team going forward."
The Gusties are back in action Wednesday, facing No. 26 Mary Washington.
