VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Gustavus women's tennis team completed its spring break trip Friday with a 5-4 loss to Averett. The Gusties, recently earning a spot in the ITA's national rankings at No. 48, drop to 7-6 on the season.
Averett took a 2-1 lead after the doubles, winning at No. 1 and No. 2. The duo of
Alli Laux and
Pavla Yakimova won the Gusties' first point at No. 3 doubles with an 8-5 victory.
The Gusties got a trio of singles wins from
Molly Austin, Yakimova, and
Ella De Young. Austin posted a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 spot. Yakimova closed out singles No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory, while De Young won at No. 6, 6-0, 6-3.
Kaya De Bruijn nearly put the Gusties on top at No. 4, coming from behind to force a third set, but eventually fell 0-6, 6-3, 1-6.
The Gusties are back in action next weekend, heading to the Midwest Invite in Madison, Wis., with draws for the tournament yet to be announced. Meanwhile, a team of Gusties will head north to face off against UM-Duluth on Saturday.
