SAINT PETER, Minn. — Logan Cyr certainly made a splash in his first season on the Gustavus men's swimming & diving team, as the Maple Grove native was named the department's Newcomer of the Year, voted on by the head coaches as a part of the 2023-24 Golden Gustie Awards. Cyr was the first Gustavus swimmer to receive Men's Rookie of the Year honors from the MIAC.
At his first conference championship meet, Cyr swam on a trio of relays, taking first in the 400 medley (3:23.52), 400 freestyle (3:04.05), and 800 freestyle (6:45.08). He also placed second individually in the 400 IM (4:09.02) and third in the 500 free (4:41.04) and 200 back (1:55.47). Cyr scored 169 points in just six events, and his contributions at the MIAC meet led the Gustie men to the program's 26th conference championship and fifth in a row.
"Both Logan and Stella [Anderson Moye] made the most of their first year as Gusties," said Head Coach
Jon Carlson. "They came into our program very talented, but took their swimming to the next level this season. I always tell our freshmen, 'You don't swim fast if you swim like freshmen,' and they swam like absolute champions this season, and were a huge part of our success on both sides."
The ballot for newcomer of the year featured four women and five men. The men were Cyr,
Jade Anstine (track & field),
Nick Brauer (cross country/track & field),
Drew Holt (hockey), and
Dominik Knutson (tennis). Brauer finished second on the ballot, followed by Anstine in third. The female newcomer ballot featured fellow swimmer
Stella Anderson Moye,
Olivia Duncan (track & field),
Carly Olson (softball), and
Kylie Scott (hockey). Anderson Moye won the vote, Duncan finished second in the voting, followed by Olson in third.
The men's swim and dive team was also a finalist for Men's Team of the Year, as voted on by SAAC. The 2023-24 swim & dive team earned its fifth-straight MIAC championship, finishing 237 points ahead of the next MIAC team. The Gusties set a multitude of school records and beat out the previous MIAC meet record and MIAC all-time record in the 200 medley relay. The team earned three of four major MIAC awards, winning a total of 13 events. Senior captain
Matt Strom finished his career as a finalist for Male Athlete of the Year, taking third in the voting. Strom was named the MIAC Men's Swimmer of the Year, qualified for the NCAA Championships in three events, earned seven MIAC individual championships, and graduated having never lost an event at the MIAC Championship Meet. Strom also broke school records in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke, and 200 medley relay this season, and was a part of the 200 medley team that broke the MIAC Championship and MIAC all-time record.
