BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Katelyn Olson (So., Cloquet) was named the MIAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Sept. 16.
The sophomore keeper helped the Gusties (3-0-2) maintain their unblemished record last week, as they defeated UW-Superior 1-0 on Tuesday and tied regionally-ranked Simpson on Saturday, 2-2. Against Superior, Olson picked up her third clean sheet of the season, and third in a row, making six saves in the 1-0 shutout. The Cloquet native collected a season-high 10 saves on Saturday, marking the third time in her career she's made saves in the double digits. Olson made six saves in the second half to give the Gusties a chance to tie the game with just five minutes remaining.
This is Olson's first weekly honor, and she is the first athlete in Gustavus women's soccer history to win the defensive honor since the conference added it in 2022.
Cambelle Waldspurger (Jr., Mahtomedi) was the last women's soccer player to be named MIAC Athlete of the Week, as the forward received the honor on Sept. 6, 2022.
Olson and the Gusties begin conference play this week, facing Carleton, who received votes last week's national poll, for their MIAC opener at the Gustie Soccer Field on Wednesday.
