SAINT PETER, Minn. - Senior goalkeeper
Katelyn Olson broke the Gustavus career saves record on Wednesday as the Gusties played through rainy conditions to a 0-0 draw with UW-Stout.
Senior
Katelyn Olson (Cloquet, Minn.) has started every game in the last three seasons for Gustavus and has only missed 414:52 in four years combined, helping the goalkeeper break the career saves record. After today, Olson has made 398 saves in net for the Gusties, just one more than Ashley Becker '20, who set the record from the 2015 through 2019 seasons.
The teams got through 43:21 in the first half before lightning rained on the match's parade, stopping the game for over an hour. The teams combined for 20 total shots in the first half, but only seven of those reached goal. UW-Stout had a slight edge in shots on goal, 5-2, while the Gusties held the lead in corners, 4-3. Juniors
Lauren Coy (Mahtomedi, Minn.) and
Meghan Colebeck (South St. Paul, Minn.) led the team with two shots each in the first stanza while classmate
Kate Hamski (Blaine, Minn.) had the other shot on goal in addition to Colebeck's.
Both shots on goal for Gustavus came early in the second half after the weather delay by first-year
Taylor Schilling (Mankato, Minn.) and sophomore
Jordyn Shear (Elk River, Minn.). After that, the Gusties only had two shots, one of which was missed and the other blocked. The Blue Devils had the offensive edge in the second half, but four saves by Olson kept the game scoreless and earned her another shutout. Olson's record breaking save came in the 86th minute, as a shot from outside the penalty area with pace went just down to her left and she was able to make the save and hold on.
Four different Gusties were responsible for the team's shots on goal and Olson was the only one who played all 90 minutes, followed closely behind by senior
Taylor Finney (Byron, Minn.) at 86. This year's senior class garnered a record of 15-11-8 in their time at the Gustie Soccer Field, starting with a 2-1 win over UW-Superior on September 1st, 2023, and ending with a tie today. The 2026 season will come to a close on Saturday, taking on No. 20 Carleton at 1 p.m. in Northfield.
