DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Gustavus men's basketball team snapped a six-game win streak Saturday with an 80-64 loss at the University of Dubuque. The Gusties drop to 9-3 overall and have completed their non-conference slate of games.
Wyatt Olson made the first basket of the game but that proved to be the only lead the Gusties held all day as Dubuque answered with 12 straight points. A
Carson Koch layup at the 15:21 mark stopped the bleeding but the Spartans came right back with eight straight points for a 20-4 advantage at the 13:14 mark.
Dubuque gained its largest lead of the first half at 39-22 with four minutes remaining before the Gusties ended the frame on a 10-5 run to make the score 44-32 at half.
The Spartans maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half until
Brady Kienitz hit a three-pointer at the 8:46 mark to make the score 59-51, but the home squad took control with a 12-5 run over the next three minutes and never looked back.
Gustavus shot 38.6 percent from the floor while the Spartans converted at 44.7 percent. The Gusties struggled from long range, making just 6-of-22 three-pointers, but did well on the boards, out-rebounding the Spartans 37-33. Both teams had 14 turnovers.
Koch led the scoring for the Gusties with 12 points off the bench.
Myles Barnette added 10 off the bench as well, while
Spencer Swanson led the team with five rebounds. Kienitz made a trio of three-pointers, passing Gustavus Athletics Hall of Famer Tim Brown (2002-04) for seventh place on the program's career three-pointers made record board. Kienitz now has 135 career threes.
Gustavus now returns to MIAC play for the rest of the season, starting with a road test at Macalester on Wednesday evening.
