SAINT PETER, Minn. – The No. 24 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College volleyball team battled the Augsburg University Auggies at home Saturday night in a conference contest. The Gusties cruised to a 3-0 sweep to improve to 17-5 on the year and 3-1 in the MIAC.
Gustavus leapt out to an early 9-3 lead in the first set. The Auggies then battled back to take a lead up 14-13. Tied at 15-15, the Gusties went on a 9-3 run to reach set point up 24-18. Augsburg won the next three points, but the Gusties secured the set 25-21.
In the second set, Gustavus again leapt out to an early lead, this time up 12-4. The Auggies slowly clawed back into contention in the set, cutting the Gusties' lead down to just four points trailing 20-16, but a 5-0 run secured the 25-16 set win for Gustavus to go up 2-0.
Once more, the Gusties leapt out the gate to take a big lead in the third set, going up 10-2. Gustavus then stretched that lead up to 17-4 and later 21-5. When the Gusties went up 23-8, Augsburg found a hot streak and won seven point in a row, but three points later Gustavus clinched the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
Logan Brent led the Gusties with eight kills on .273 hitting.
Addison Dirkes hit .308 with seven kills and five total blocks.
Macie Malchow orchestrated the offense with 17 assists.
Ella Olson and
Maren Sundberg each had 12 digs in the match.
Up next for the Gusties is a trip to Arden Hills for a road match at the Bethel University Royals on Saturday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m.
