SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College football team battled the No. 10 nationally ranked Saint John's University Johnnies at home Saturday at Hollingsworth Field. After falling behind early, the Gusties rallied in the second quarter to stay within striking range of the Johnnies, but Saint John's pulled away in the second half as the Gusties fell 31-13.
The Johnnies scored twice in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead. Saint John's extended their lead in the second quarter with a field goal to go up 17-0, but then the Gusties started to force turnovers to jumpstart a rally.
Midway through the second quarter,
Myshawn King forced a fumble on a sack that
Max Olson recovered for Gustavus on the Johnnies' 31-yard line. Eight plays later,
Owen Forsythe kicked a field goal to put the Gusties on the board, down 17-3.
On the ensuing drive,
Ethan Bartell forced another Saint John's fumble that
Bode Hogan recovered for Gustavus on the Johnnies' 43-yard line with 1:19 remaining before halftime. The Gusties put together an eight-play drive that culminated in
Dylan Blount finding
Jordan Wold in the endzone from two-yards out for a Gustavus touchdown. The extra point brought the Gusties to within seven of the Johnnies before halftime as they trailed just 17-10.
In the third quarter, Saint John's scored a touchdown to go up 24-10. Gustavus responded with an 11-play drive that resulted in another field goal for Forsythe to pull the Gusties within 11 down 24-13. The Johnnies scored one more touchdown in the fourth quarter to go up 31-13 on a drive that chewed up nine minutes and 31 seconds of the game clock, leaving Gustavus with just 3:29 remaining to mount a comeback effort. The Gusties' final drive ended in a turnover on downs as the Johnnies secured the win.
