ST. PAUL, Minn. – The No. 22 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College volleyball team battled the Macalester College Scots on the road Saturday night in a conference contest, winning by way of a 3-0 sweep to improve to 22-5 overall and 8-1 in the MIAC.
The Scots led 5-2 early in the opening set, but the Gusties went on an 11-2 run to take a 13-7 lead. Macalester battled back and drew within two down 16-14, but Gustavus outscored the Scots 9-4 down the stretch to take the first set 25-18.
In set two, the Gusties opened with a 6-0 run and later stretched their lead to 11 points up 14-3. Macalester won five of the next six points to draw within seven down 15-8, but Gustavus closed the set on a 10-3 run to win it 25-11 and go up 2-0 in the match.
Set three saw the Scots go on an early 5-0 run to take a 10-5 lead. The Gusties battled back and kept within striking distance of Macalester. Trailing 20-16, Gustavus caught fire for a 6-0 run to take the lead up 22-20. The Scots tied the set at 22-22, but the Gusties won the final three points to secure the 25-22 set win and the 3-0 sweep.
Sydney Timm led the Gusties' attack with 11 kills on .450 hitting and 12 digs for a double-double.
Sahara Morken orchestrated the offense with 28 assists.
Maren Sundberg led the defensive effort with 17 digs.
Up next for the Gusties is a return home to Saint Peter for a match against the Saint Mary's University Cardinals on Wednesday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m.
