ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men's soccer team battled the Macalester College Scots on the road Thursday evening in the MIAC Playoff Semifinals, falling 2-1.
The Scots jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Zach Liptzin scored in the fifth minute to put Macalester up very early in the match.
Gustavus tied the game up at 1-1 in the 18
th minute as
Joe Flory passed the ball through two Macalester defenders to find
Kieran Mahan one-on-one against the Scots' keeper. Mahan dribbled through the keeper's diving attempt to grab the ball and fired past two incoming defenders to score the equalizer for the Gusties.
Macalester went on to score what would be the game-winner in the 38
th minute by Milan Shah. Neither team managed to score after that goal, leading to a 2-1 victory for the Scots.
Gustavus was outshot by the Scots 17-7 with a narrow 6-4 deficit in shots on goal. Each team had one yellow card in the match.
Ryder Tomlinson led the Gusties with three shots in the game, one on goal. Flory had a team-high two shots on goal.
Vikram Couto had two saves for Gustavus in goal.
Gustavus will now await the NCAA Selection Show to see if they will be selected as one of the at-large bids to enter the national tournament.
