SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men's basketball team battled the Simpson College Storm on the road Tuesday night in a non-conference contest. The Gusties trailed by 10 at halftime but rallied in the second half to win 71-67 over the Storm, improving to 8-1 overall this winter.
Simpson scored the first five points of the game and built their lead to 14 points up 26-12 with 9:05 to go in the opening half. By halftime the Gusties had cut into the lead but still trailed by 10 down 40-30.
Gustavus opened the second half with an 11-2 run to cut the Storm's lead down to one at 42-41. The Gusties went on to tie the game up at 45-45 and took their first lead of the game on their next position with an
Isaac Matti layup, up 47-45 with 12:23 to go.
Simpson retook the lead with a 7-0 run to go up 52-47 and held the lead until
Obinna Izuora hit a jumper in the paint with 4:58 to go to put Gustavus up 59-58. The Gusties held the narrow lead for the remainder of the game, never leading by more than four points down the stretch as they held off the Storm's comeback attempt to win 71-67.
Myles Barnette led the Gusties with 20 points in the win to go along with a team-high four steals. Izuora followed with 17 points off the bench, shooting 6-for-10 from the field and grabbing four rebounds.
Andrew Quam had a team-high six rebounds to go with 11 points.
Gustavus dominated the box score in points off turnovers (19-to-5), second chance points (17-to-4), and bench points (29-to-19).
Up next for Gustavus is a road trip to Florida for the 2025 Florida Sunshine Shootout starting with a game against Transylvania on Sunday, December 28 at 4:00 p.m.
