BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Karina Elvestrom (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) was named the MIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the first time of her career on Monday, Feb. 3.
Elvestrom went 1-1 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles against a pair of Division I opponents in her first weekend of dual matches with the No. 24 Gustavus tennis team. Elvestrom won at the No. 1 spot against University of Northern Iowa in a 4-3 loss, and claimed a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles over UNI with partner
Kaya De Bruijn. Her only losses came to undefeated Division I Creighton University.
This is the first MIAC honor of Elvestrom's young career, and the first week that conference player of the week recognition has been awarded this season. Elvestrom swept the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in the fall to earn two All-America honors in her first semester of collegiate tennis.
The Gusties (1-2 overall) host a pair of Division II opponents next Saturday, Feb. 8, inviting Sioux Falls (0-1 overall) and MSU-Mankato to the Swanson Tennis Center before beginning conference play the following day against Concordia (0-5, 0-3 MIAC). Gustavus will also face MSU-Moorhead (3-0 overall) Sunday, Feb. 9, in Fargo.
