SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 23 Gustavus women's tennis concluded its spring break to Texas against No. 9 Wash U (Mo.), falling to the Bears 7-0. The Gusties finish their trip 3-3 and move to 9-6 overall (2-0 MIAC).
Wash U (6-3 overall), ranked No. 9 in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), won the doubles point with a 3-0 sweep to start.
Karina Elvestrom (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) and
Kaya De Bruijn (Jr., Maasland, Netherlands), ranked No. 12 in the nation as a pair, dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 1 doubles to the No. 1 doubles team in the country of Eleanor Archer and Caitlin Bui.
Molly Austin (Jr., Arden Hills, Minn.) and
Lanie Davis (Fy., St. Louis, Mo.) fell 7-5 at No. 2, while
Brooke Haddorff (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) and
Pavla Yakimova (Jr., Glasgow, Scotland) suffered a 6-2 defeat at No. 3.
In singles play, Wash U claimed every match in two sets, limiting the Gusties to three points or less in five of six singles matches. Elvestrom battled to a tiebreaker in her second set, but ultimately fell to the Bears' Archer, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
The Gusties return to Minnesota to host Luther (Iowa) on Saturday, March 15, for a 12 p.m. match at the Swanson Tennis Center.
