4/21/2025 1:00:00 PM

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – For the second time this season, Kaya De Bruijn has been selected as the MIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Monday, April 21.

De Bruijn (Jr., Maasland, Netherlands) helped the No. 29 Gusties claim their first win over Carleton, ranked 24th in the nation, in five matches dating back three seasons. De Bruijn won at No. 1 doubles, completing the 3-0 doubles sweep with partner Karina Elvestrom (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.), and clinched the match with a battle at No. 2 singles.

She won her first singles set 6-3, but dropped her second of the match to force the super-breaker. She and Carleton's Nechiporuk played to seven tie scores, and Nechiporuk took a late lead at 10-9, but De Bruijn rattled off the next three points to clinch the victory. Her win helped the team maintain its status as the only undefeated in the MIAC.

The junior is 15-8 this season in singles play and 5-1 in the conference, with her only loss coming at No. 1 to the nationally-ranked top player at St. Catherine. All of her other wins in MIAC singles have come in the No. 2 spot. She's won nine of her last 10 singles matches, as well. She and Elvestrom are 21-7 in doubles play this year, and undefeated in conference play with a mark of 7-0. All of their wins have come in the No. 1 slot for the Gusties, and the team has claimed seven victories over regionally-ranked opponents.

This is De Bruijn's fourth honor of her career, as she earned the selection on April 7 of this season and twice in her sophomore year. Three Gusties, including De Bruijn, have won four MIAC weekly honors.

The Gusties (22-7, 8-0 MIAC) have just two conference matches remaining, traveling to Bethel (12-3, 7-1 MIAC) on Saturday, April 26 for a match that will certainly determine playoff standings, followed by the team's regular season finale at St. Scholastica (11-5, 5-3 MIAC) on the following day, April 27.
