SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Gustavus women's soccer team got the season started on the right foot, defeating UW-Superior 4-0, off the backs of multi-point games out of Hailee Wilson (Sr., Ashland, Wis.),
Amara Easley (So., Champlin Park, Minn), and
Cambelle Waldspurger (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.). This marks the first win in head coach
Lauren Johnson's tenure at Gustavus.
The match marked the third time the Gusties and Yellowjackets have faced each other and ended up being the most lopsided matchup in history. This is the second year in a row the Gusties have shut out UW-Superior, both times being on the road in Superior, Wisconsin.
In the first half, the Gusties dominated, taking an early 3-0 lead. The first goal came at the 17:35 mark, when Wilson was played a through ball by Waldspurger where Wilson slotted the ball home. The second came once again off the foot of Wilson, this time cleaning up the rebound after a shot by Easley. Waldspurger found the net just a 1:05 after the second goal after an individual effort to increase the lead to three heading into halftime.
The second half saw one more goal for the Gusties to close the game. The fourth goal came off a long free kick played by
Payton Mahady (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) which Easley ran onto and chipped over the UW-Superior goalkeeper. Goalkeeper
Katelyn Olson (Jr., Cloquet, Minn.) kept the shutout, saving nine shots. The shutout is her first of the season and the 12th of her career.
Head Coach
Lauren Johnson becomes the sixth coach in Gustavus history to win a game and is the first time she has won a game representing the Gusties since April 28th, 2021 when she played for the program.
The Gusties are back in action on Sunday, August 31st at 2:00 p.m., when they visit UW-Stout (1-0-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) for a non-conference matchup.
