Volleyball Takes Down Pacific Lutheran, Falls to Southwestern on Final Day of Puget Sound Premiere

TACOMA, Wash. – The Gustavus Adolphus College volleyball team competed in two matches on Saturday to close out their weekend at the Puget Sound Premiere. The Gusties took down the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes in a 3-1 victory but later fell 3-2 to the Southwestern University Pirates.

In the opening match against Pacific Lutheran, Gustavus trailed 20-15 in the first set. The Gusties then caught fire and went on a 10-2 run to rally and take the set 25-22.

The Lutes responded by taking the second set 25-20, but Gustavus answered back with a 25-19 win in set three. Gustavus had trailed 13-12 midway through the set, but then a 6-0 run to go up 18-13 gave them the edge to take the set.

The Gusties closed out the win in the fourth set. Leading 18-17, they caught fire again for a 7-1 run to clinch the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.

In their final match of the invitational against Southwestern, the Gusties took the opening set 25-14 and the second 25-22 to take a 2-0 lead over the Pirates.

With their back to the wall, Southwestern responded by taking the next two sets 25-19 and 25-23 to tie the match and force a fifth set. Gustavus battled the Pirates to a 10-10 tie in the race to 15, but Southwestern closed out the match with a 5-1 run to secure the win over the Gusties.

At the close of the tournament, Sydney Timm was named the West Coach Premiere Most Outstanding Player. Along with Timm, Maren Sundberg and Greta Tompkins were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Up next for the Gusties is a return to Minnesota for the Augsburg Invitational. Gustavus opens the invite on Friday, September 5 with matches against the University of Minnesota Morris at 2:30 p.m. and Grinnell College at 5:00 p.m.
