Volleyball Sweeps Lakeland, UW-La Crosse on Final Day of Augsburg Invite

MINNEAPOLIS – The Gustavus Adolphus College volleyball team faced the Lakeland University Muskies and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles on Saturday at the final day of the Augsburg Invite. The Gusties swept both the Muskies and the Eagles, improving their record to 6-1 on the year.

Match One: Lakeland

The Gusties started strong with a first set in which they prevented Lakeland from winning more than two points in a row while allowing back-to-back points just five times in a 25-16 set win.

Gustavus and Lakeland battled to 19-19 in the second set, but then the Gusties won six of the next seven points to take the set 25-20 and go up 2-0 in the match.

The Muskies led 10-8 early in the third set, but Gustavus closed out the set and match with a 17-4 run to sweep Lakeland.

Greta Tompkins had 10 kills on .643 hitting and six total blocks in the win. Maren Sundberg led the Gusties with 17 digs. Sahara Morken and Macie Malchow had 20 and 16 assists respectively.

Match Two: UW-La Crosse

An early 7-0 run helped Gustavus leap out to a 10-4 lead in the first set and later lead 21-13, but the Eagles then won 11 of the next 14 points to tie the set up at 24-24. The Gusties responded with back-to-back kills to win the set.

In the second set, UW-La Crosse led 9-8 early, but a 9-2 Gustavus run to put the Gusties up 19-12 gave them the breathing room to take the set 25-18 and go up 2-0 in the match.

The Eagles went on to take a 19-11 lead in the third set as they aimed to extend the match, but Gustavus caught fire to win nine in a row to go up 20-19 and then won five of the next eight points to take the set 25-22 and secure the 3-0 match sweep.

Sophia Deyak and Leah Berg led the Gusties with 11 kills each on .450 and .276 hitting respectively. Sundberg again led Gustavus with 16 digs and the duo of Malchow and Morken were the assists leaders with 23 and 12 respectively.
