SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College women's tennis team is hosting their Fall Invite this weekend with the first matches taking place on Saturday.
In the first singles draw,
Kaya De Bruijn defeated Paula Garcia Acebal of Bemidji State 6-2, 6-4 in round one and then took down Pari Chaven of Grinnell 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 in the semifinals to advance to Sunday's final against J. Van Zeijl of Jamestown.
Allison Szalay won two matches in the second singles draw to advance to the final. Szalay won 6-2, 6-2 over Logan Tom of Grinnell in the opening round and then earned a 7-5, 6-7(5), 10-5 win over
Ella De Young in the semifinals.
Pavla Yakimova is set to compete in the third draw singles final after winning 6-2, 6-4 in round one and then rallying to win 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 in the semifinals.
The fifth singles draw final will feature a Gustie as well as
Katie Thompson took her opening round 6-1, 6-1 and then won her semifinal match 6-1, 6-0.
Two Gusties are set to compete in the sixth draw singles final as
Ashley Stroebel and
Bethany Smith both earned their way to the championship match.
In doubles, the teams of Austin/Szalay and Elvestrom/DeBruijn both advanced to the semifinals in the top draw. The Gusties have two teams competing in the second round, three teams competing in the third draw, and two more in the fourth doubles draw.
Gustavus will return to the courts on Sunday, September 14 for the final matches of the invite.
