NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The No. 24 nationally ranked Gustavus Adolphus College volleyball team faced the Wartburg College Knights and the No. 1 nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks on Saturday for the final day of the Carleton/St. Olaf Invitational. The Gusties defeated the Knights 3-1 but fell to the No. 1 Warhawks 3-0.
Match One: Wartburg
In the opening set, Gustavus rallied from a 21-14 deficit to win 12 of the next 15 points, surviving four set points, to take the opening set 26-24. Wartburg responded with a 25-19 second set victory to even the match at 1-1. The Gusties went on to take set three 25-22 and set four 25-19 to secure the 3-1 match victory.
Logan Brent led Gustavus with 11 kills.
Macie Malchow recorded 41 assists.
Maren Sundberg led the defense with 23 digs.
In a defensive battle, the Gusties hit .118 while holding the Knights to .087 for the match.
Match Two: No. 1 UW-Whitewater
The first set saw the two nationally ranked teams in a back-and-forth battle where neither side led by more than three points all set. Gustavus tied the set late at 23-23, but two Warhawk kills secured a 25-23 opening set victory for UW-Whitewater.
Set two was closely contested as well. The Warhawks led 22-18 late, but the Gusties won three of the next four to pull within two down 23-21. A pair of kills for UW-Whitewater secured the 25-21 set win as the Gustavus fell behind 2-0.
The Warhawks led 17-13 in the third until a 6-1 run put the Gusties on to 19-18. UW-Whitewater then took seven of the next 10 points to take a 25-22 set win, securing the match win 3-0 over Gustavus.
Brent had 10 kills in the match. Malchow's 26 assists led the way for the Gusties. Sundberg had 17 digs for Gustavus.
The Warhawks hit .261 while Gustavus hit .184.
