SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women's soccer team battled Nebraska Wesleyan to a 1-1 tie today at the Gustie Soccer Field. This was the first matchup between the two teams since 2018 and the first time a matchup between the two teams has ended in a tie.
In the first half, the Gusties had seven shots, four of which were on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net. Consistent pressure was placed on the Nebraska Wesleyan team, with five corners in the first half as well. Tessa Zachmann (So., Blaine, Minn.) contributed four of those seven shots and hit the post in the 25th minute with a shot from distance.
In the second half, the game balanced out, with the Gusties dropping to three shots on goal, the same as the Prairie Wolves. The deadlock was broken six minutes into the half, when a Nebraska Wesleyan free kick from the right side of the field trickled through defenders and attackers and found the bottom left corner to put the Prairie Wolves in the lead. In the 77th minute, Zachmann found the goal she was looking for all game, this time on a volley. Haillee Wilson (Sr., Ashland, Wis.) was played the ball in the right corner and crossed the ball into the penalty area where Zachmann sent it home. After the goal, no more shots on goal were registered and the game would end in a tie.
The goal today for Zachmann is her second in as many games and she has scored on two of her three shots on goal this season. Katelyn Olson (Jr., Cloquet, Minn.) got her eighth start of the season in goal and had three saves.
Next up for the Gustavus women's soccer team is a home, non-conference matchup against Luther on Wednesday at 5:00 pm. This is the continuation of a game on September 13th that was started and later suspended in the 40th minute due to high temperatures.
