MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College football team traveled north to face the Concordia College Moorhead Cobbers on Saturday. The Gusties scored an early touchdown and led for the first half, but the Cobbers scored two touchdowns in the third quarter and a Gustavus two-point attempt in the final minutes was stopped just short as the Gusties fell 14-13.
The Gusties scored on the opening possession of the game to go up 7-0. Gustavus marched down the field for 10 plays to reach the Cobber's 20-yard line. On the 11
th play of the drive,
Jacob Ginskey found
Brayden Sturm in the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown pass to put the Gusties up early.
For the rest of the first half, both defenses held the opposing offense scoreless. On the first possession of the second half, Concordia drove down the field on a 10-play, 76-yard scoring drive, capped off by a 20-yard touchdown pass to the end zone to tie the game at 7-7.
The Cobbers scored again later in the third quarter to go up 14-7. After blocking a punt to set themselves up on the Gusties' 23-yard line, Concordia rushed four times to reach the six-yard line and then scored on a touchdown pass to take their first lead of the game with 52 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
With just over four minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Gustavus defense made a crucial stop on third-and-one to give the ball back to their offense. The Gusties' final drive started on their own 13-yard line, and they went on to march down the field on an 11-play, 87-yard drive that was capped off by a nine-yard touchdown pass by
Dylan Blount to
Simon Morgan, bringing Gustavus within one point down 14-13 with just 1:16 remaining.
The Gusties initially aimed to tie the game by kicking the extra point, but an offsides flag on the defense combined with the kick missing wide left gave Gustavus the opportunity to go for the win from the one-yard line. Unfortunately for the Gusties, the Cobbers' defensive front held strong to hold Gustavus short of the goal line on their rushing attempt, maintaining the one-point lead for Concordia and allowing the Cobbers to kneel out the clock to secure the win over the Gusties.
Up next for Gustavus is a return home to Saint Peter for their homecoming game next Saturday, October 4 at 1:00 p.m. against Carleton College.
