BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Gustavus volleyball outside hitter Leah Berg (Sr., Kenyon, Minn.) has been named the MIAC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. This is the first time Berg has been named Athlete of the Week in her career.
In two matches this weekend against Saint Benedict and St. Catherine, Berg brought in 25 kills, averaging 12.5 per match. The Kenyon native had 12 kills on 31 attacks on Friday night against Saint Benedict, hitting .323 and adding a solo block and a block assist for two total blocks in the home opener. On Saturday night at St. Catherine, Berg tied her season best in kills with 13 and had another two blocks. She hit .385, her second best clip of the season, only behind another 13-kill performance against Cornell College. The senior had her best stretch of the weekend early in the third set, where she was responsible for four of five points in a row, with three kills and a block assist to extend the lead from 16-8 to 21-8. This match performance is also tied for the second most kills in a single match in her career, only behind her performance against St. Catherine last season, where she had 15 kills in the MIAC regular season finale. This weekend's performance brought Berg over the 150-kill mark for the season and 400-kill mark in her career.
The Gusties continue their season this Wednesday at home, when they host regional rival, Northwestern-St. Paul, at 7:00 p.m. in their Homecoming match. This weekend, the Gustavus volleyball team will travel to Stevens Point, Wisconsin for the Pointer Invite.
