BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College men's golf team competed in the three-round MIAC Championship this weekend at the Edinburgh Golf Course. The Gusties were tied for second after the opening round of +13 on Saturday, moved up to first place with a +7 on Sunday, and ultimately placed second on Monday with a round of +12 to finish at +32 for the tournament. Bethel University shot +27 to win the team title, rallying with a tournament-best round of +3 on Monday to overtake the Gusties.
"This one stings," said Gustavus head coach
Scott Moe. "We were in great position as we made the turn to the final nine holes and we knew what we had ahead of us and the shots we needed to hit. That golf course makes you pay for your miscues and we had a few coming down the stretch. Our conference is really strong and we knew it was going to be a battle. Congrats to our three guys that made the All-Championship team. Back to work as we get ready for two more major tournaments, our own event and then Golfweek in the middle of October. Still have a lot left to accomplish."
Wyatt Carlson,
Blake Forrest, and
Chris Gutuza each finished in the top 10 overall, earning All-Championship honors. Carlson tied for second overall out of the field of 45 golfers, shooting +5 through the three-day championship. Forrest tied for sixth after shooting +8 through the three rounds. Gutuza tied for ninth, shooting +9 in the championship.
Jimmy Abdo placed 13
th overall for the Gusties, shooting +11 for the tournament.
Sam LaFrenz finished 34
th, shooting +22 through the three rounds.
Up next for Gustavus is the Twin Cities Classic starting Saturday, October 4 and running for three days through Monday, October 6.
